This commercial structure was purpose-built for Bras d'Or Oyster Farms, Ltd. with both processing and retail space. Because it was a food-related business, the construction standards had to pass government inspection for that industry. The building passed inspection and is therefore of a quality considerable higher than the norm.

The land on the Baddeck side of the lot is next to 80 acres of Crown Land which extends down to the lake shore in one direction and across the road up the ridge in the opposite direction. There is an old road that goes up the ridge and eventually ends up at Lake Ainslie. The portion of this land that is on the water side of the road has a very lovely stream at the bottom of a gorge that empties into the Bras d'Or. Locals, in the past but not so much any more, used the spot for fishing and for hunting (ducks and geese, mainly).
