The centerpiece of this property is a charming country school house conversion done in a traditional gable style. It was completely renovated in 1978 and included the construction of a new, fully developed basement with pool room, bedroom, laundry room, cold room and a furnace room complete with a high-tech, high-effeciency oil furnace.
The focus of the ground level layout is an inviting main room with hand-hewn beams and a fireplace with airtight, glass-fronted woodstove. A dining room, galley-style kitchen and half-bath, decorated in black and white tile, installed in 2006, plus two bedrooms upstairs adds up to 1560 square feet of living space.
Fifty feet across the yard is a storey-and-a-half carriage house constructed to match the main house in 1988. It was purpose-built as a weaving studio (upstairs), with a workshop on the ground floor. The studio includes a utility bathroom with shower, a kitchenette and a small bedroom as well as a loft and storage area. The building lends itself to reconfiguration and could easily be converted to a cottage, a mother-in-law flat or a second domicile.
The four acres of land have a 175 foot western border on the beautiful Baddeck River which includes the best swimming hole/fishing pool in the valley.
The landscaping on this property and in particular its flower gardens are a local landmark, well known and admired by area residents. The flower gardens have been designed so as to require a minimum of maintenance while offering a maximum of natural appeal. The vegetable gardens are 100% organic.
The landscaped portion of the acreage (approximately 2 acres) is defined by dry-stone walls and, close to the dooryard, incorporates a flagged, crescent-shaped, sunken patio with a stone fire pit. Below the fire-pit, the path leads to a small pond fed by the overflow from a spring-fed well which keeps the property supplied with water. Beyond the little pond is a meadow backed by the rolling foothills that delineate the Baddeck River Valley.
Although this delightful property is completely private and secluded, it is less than 10 minutes from Baddeck, a resort town located on the Bras d'Or Lakes at the beginning of the Cabot Trail. Baddeck is probably best known for being the summer retreat of Alexander Graham Bell. |
