Overview:

The last part of what once was a 1000 acre farm, these 39 acres on the Bras d’Or are south facing, have a beach, a private rocky nook, a glorious sloping meadow and a newly renovated house. None are easily found these days. Until recently used as a productive farm, and still looked after by the family as an on-going hay producer, the land is simply beautiful. Partly covered by a small forest, roughly divided 1/5 and 4/5 by a median brook, it is private, quiet and suggests a family compound that will last long into the future. In fact there is a memorial and grave site of the family that arrived originally in the eighteenth century, and whose descendant is now a very famous Hollywood star. The home at the top of the hill has been extensively renovated and, while compact in size, it is modernized and comfortable. This is one of the dwindling number of large land parcels available on the shores of the Bras d`Or Lakes, and is part of a family’s history that stretches from the 18th Century.

Comments:

  • Property location is a reasonable distance from Sydney, Cape Breton's largest urban area.
  • A sandy beach on the Bras d'Or is something of a rarity. Not only does this property have one, it is located within a protected cove which blocks wind and provides privacy.
  • The panoramic lake view from the property includes a side of Long Island, a large scenic island known for its natural beauty.
  • As with many pastoral properties in Cape Breton, this 39 acre parcel was part of a working farm with beef cattle and hay production. The barns and the cattle are gone but hay is still produced and sold in the local community. Up until a few years ago, there was also an extensive vegetable garden that more than supplied the needs of the owners. The vendor provided several older photos from the family album that show the property in its working farm days:
