POINTS OF INTEREST NEARBY
-
Highland Hill Trail is between Iona and Grand Narrows. If you follow it to the lookouts on Cains Mountain, you can see all of the four counties of Cape Breton, and if you read the trail's interpretive panels, you'll learn about modern forest management and silviculture. The trail is wide and well maintained but there are steep sections on the mountain. It is like a series of stacked loops, with each loop larger than the previous. As a result there are several options, the shortest being 1 1/2 miles and the longest (the entire outside loop) just under five miles.
-
The Washabuck River is nearby and is known for being a very good fishing location.
-
The historical town of Iona is nearby. Because it is one of the earliest recorded settlements in Cape Breton, it is a centre for the Gaelic language, fiddle music and highland culture. The latter is celebrated in the historical site called "the Highland Village," a re-creation of early pioneer days on Cape Breton Island. Due to its historical importance, Iona tends to be the centre of many activities in this part of Cape Breton. There is a new P-12 school in the community.
-
Nearby Grand Narrows is also very important in the community as it boasts the bridge, a Marina, the Barra Lodge, a store and an N.S. liquor outlet.
- Baddeck is a short boat ride away.
-
The Little Narrows Ferry - connects TransCanada Highway travellers to the Iona area.
